Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is looking to strengthen in several positions this summer, with full-back being an area of priority considering his current options.

As reported by Chronicle journalist Chris Waugh, Benitez is seeking a right-back to challenge DeAndre Yedlin for a first-team berth, with enquiries launched for several players.

Currenty the Magpies have just Yedlin, Javier Manquillo and Paul Dummett in the squad as out-and-out full-backs, and that is something which must be addressed in the coming weeks.

In terms of options, Benitez will surely have had his eye on the World Cup, and one player who has impressed in the tournament is Colombia right-back Santiago Arias.

The 26-year-old right-back currently plies his trade in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven, having been at the club for five years now, and looks ready for a step up in competition.

The right-sided flyer is coming off the season of his life for the Eredivisie club in which he was named the league’s Player of the Year after providing six assists and scoring three goals in 30 matches.

At the World Cup, Arias has provided Colombia with a constant attacking threat down the right, and more importantly has looked solid in defence for Los Cafeteros.

There is little doubt that Arias would provide Yedlin with some serious competition for his starting berth, and that is exactly what Benitez wants to create this summer.

Arias is not as quick as the USA international, but his quality on the ball and decision-making seemingly make him a viable option to start for the Magpies in the Premier League.

What’s more, the Colombian right-back is entering the final year of his deal at PSV, and would therefore be available on the cheap this summer.

A move for Arias looks to be a no-brainer for Newcastle this summer, and Benitez must now spring into action to make it a reality.
