Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has been thrown in the deep end needlessly again by owner Mike Ashley, with the Spaniard being handed minimal funds to spend in the summer window.

The Magpies’ sole signing of the window so far has been Kenedy on a year-long loan from Chelsea, which is admittedly a big coup for the club after the Brazilian’s impressive performances at St. James’ Park last term.

Benitez’s biggest concern this summer is up front, with the Magpies scoring just 39 goals in 38 games in 2017/18, with a goalscoring striker now a top priority.

A move for such a player is yet to materialise, with the club reportedly identifying West Bromwich Albion forward Salomon Rondon as their top target.

However, a deal for Rondon looks tough to complete considering the asking price of £16million and the restraints placed on Benitez’s spending, and the club may have to look elsewhere.

One place they could look is Arsenal, where new boss Unai Emery has just left five players out of their pre-season tour to Singapore, as reported by the Evening Standard.

One of those snubbed by Emery is Joel Campbell, with the Standard claiming that the Costa Rica international is now free to pursue a permanent move away from the Emirates as he enters the final year of his deal.

Campbell would be a brilliant option for the Magpies, and most importantly, he would be well within their price range.

The 26-year-old attacker is highly versatile, being able to play in his preferred position on the wing, while also filling in up front when needed.

Benitez has reportedly made clear his desire to bring in a new wide man this summer, and a deal for Campbell may therefore kill two birds with one stone.

Signing the speedy left-footed maestro would likely cost the club between £5million and £10million, and that is most certainly a price that Benitez will be able to afford.

If the club were able to bring in both Campbell and Rondon, that would represent a successful summers spending on strengthening their attack.

But first that Campbell deal must be pursued, and fast, with several clubs sure to be plotting swoops for the Costa Rican trickster.
