Newcastle are interested in a move for Paraguay international Miguel Almiron, according to a reliable journalist.

Ed Aarons, from the Guardian, made the claim on Thursday afternoon on his personal Twitter page.

He also said that Premier League rivals West Ham were looking at him as well, but neother side had placed an official bid yet.

He said that Atlanta wanted £20million for the MLS player who hit an impressive eight goals and 11 assists in just 21 top-flight games.

OPINION

Almiron is a quality attacking player who is currently ripping it up in the States. He would be a great asset for Newcastle but it comes down to the usual – money. Atlanta want £20million for him and Newcastle don’t have that sort of money. Benitez is still trying to get a striker over the line and that’s around the top-end of the budget he has to do that. He hasn’t got another £20million to spare and if he’s going up against anyone else with money it’s hard to see how Newcastle would come out on top. Of course, just because Atlanta want £20million doesn’t mean they’ll get it. However, they paid £7million for him a year ago and his stock has risen since then. 11 assists and eight goals in 21 games has done that. We can file this one under Mike Ashley and just hope that Benitez can find a way to get a quality striker over the line. Luxuries like Almiron are for another day, unfortunately.
