Newcastle United are in a three-way tussle alongside Cardiff City and Middlesbrough for West Bromwich Albion winger Matt Phillips, according to the Daily Mail.

The British newspaper state that the Magpies are keen on signing the 27-year-old who has 12 caps for Scotland but that they face competition for his signature.

The Daily Mail report that Phillips’ future at the Baggies is in doubt following their relegation but that it remains to be seen whether WBA will entertain the idea of selling him this summer.

OPINION

Phillips isn’t the type of signing that will get Magpies supporters celebrating his potential arrival but he would be a decent addition to the squad. The 27-year-old Scotland international regularly featured for WBA in the Premier League last season and put in some decent performances during his 30 league outings. The right-sided winger finished his 2017/18 campaign having scored three goals and registered three assist in the 34 appearances he made across all competitions and he could do a respectable job at St James Park. Phillips has featured 109 times in England’s top-flight during his career so would be able to settle in quickly at the Magpies as he knows the Premier League very well. The only issue to this potential transfer is that Cardiff, according to the Mail’s report, are already plotting an £11million move for Phillips so the Magpies will have to act quickly if they want to have any chance of winning the three-horse race for his signature.
