Newcastle United have confirmed the sale of striker Aleksandar Mitrović to Fulham.

The Magpies announced the departure of the Serbian striker on their official Twitter account on Monday evening.

The former Anderlecht striker joins his new club on a five-year contract until 2023 and signs for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old rejoins Fulham, who he joined on loan in the second-half of last season, scoring 12 goals in 20 games as the London club achieved promotion to the Premier League.

This is where the real transfer window starts for Rafael Benitez. Now Mitrovic is gone, the funds raised from his sale can finally be available to strengthen the Newcastle squad ahead of next season. Although they’ve lost a quality striker, his sale may have been necessary in order to strengthen the squad overall for next season, as the club are seriously behind other clubs in their preparations for next season. The Toon fans will be hoping that the Serbian’s sale will finally convince Mike Ashley to part with some of his cash and they can get on to securing a number of their manager’s transfer targets. There’s not long left in the window and a lot of business should have already been done before this, but Benitez now has the chance to make his mark and bring his own players in. Their Premier League survival could depend on what happens over the coming days, that’s how much business needs to be done.
