Mbemba jets out to Porto

Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba has arrived in Portugal to wrap up his protracted transfer to Porto, according to Mais Futebol

The Portuguese outlet claim that the 23-year-old DR Congo international arrived in Porto on Monday evening to finalise the move and put pen to paper on a four-year deal.

Mais Futebol claim that the deal was slowed amid interest from other clubs but there has been a breakthrough in talks in the last few days and a deal will be struck later this week, barring any further delays.

Good move for Newcastle United?

An exit for Mbemba makes sense for the Magpies, with manager Rafa Benitez deeming the Congolese defender to be surplus to requirements at St. James’ Park.

But while this report seems to suggest that progress has been made in talks in recent days, there is little mention of price, and that has been the main issue so far.

Newcastle are thought to be seeking £8million for Mbemba, with Porto said to be offering around £6million.

This would only represent a good deal if the Portuguese champions have upped their initial bid to a fee more similar to that being chased by the Magpies.

Nothing but Newcastle rating: 5/10

Likely to happen?

It looks like Mbemba will leave the club, and if this report is to be believed then his move to Porto is inching closer.

It seems as though Mbemba is keen on a move to Portugal, where Champions League football awaits, and if they have stumped up the asking price then there looks to be little left to be agreed.

It is claimed that a deal will be finalised this week, so expect further updates in the coming days.
