Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has been left ‘deeply disappointed’ by Anderlecht’s efforts to sign him this summer, according to Het Laatste Nieuws.

The Belgian newspaper, as translated by Sport Witness, report that the 26-year-old is questioning Anderlecht’s desire to sign him after they followed up a rejected £1.75million bid with a derisory offer of £1.75million plus bonuses.

HLN report that Sels has now been left saddened by the Belgian First Division club’s negotiating tactics after spending a successful season on loan there in 2017/18.

OPINION

It is no wonder that Sels is frustrated by Anderlecht’s tactics in negotiations to sign him, with talks now dragging on for another week. There seem to be few obstacles here apart from price, with the Magpies keen to get Sels off the books and Anderlecht keen to retain his services in the long-term, so this hold up must be upsetting for the 26-year-old. The issues clearly lie with the Belgian club and their finances, with a return bid of £1.75million with bonuses a bit of an insult after their initial bid of just £1.75million was rejected. It is not like Newcastle are demanding an extortionate price for Sels either, with reports elsewhere suggesting that the Toon are merely holding out for £500,000 more, with a final price tag set at £2.25million. It remains to be seen whether Anderlecht will return with such an offer, and if they fail to do so, then Sels will surely be devastated by their decision. The 26-year-old has earned a permanent move with his form in 2017/18, and to see that disintegrate over £500,000 would be a kick in the teeth.
