Newcastle United will begin to make tangible progress in their summer transfer business in July, according to a reliable journalist.

Lee Ryder, chief Newcastle United writer for the Chronicle, claimed in a Q&A on Wednesday (13:19), that the club would be receiving TV payments from the Premier League next month.

Ryder reported that the influx of money from the Premier League should see the club’s summer business get going, with the Chronicle worryingly reporting elsewhere that the Magpies are yet to submit a bid for anyone this window.

When asked if fans would see progress in the market next month, Ryder said: “I think after July there will be progress and that’s partly because the money from TV will be in the bank.”

OPINION

Magpies fans will be baying for movement in the market, and while this update provides some explanation behind their malaise in the window so far, it does not excuse the club’s decision to wait so long to move this summer. You would think that Mike Ashley had learnt his lesson from last year, but the club’s success in finishing tenth this season has obviously had the opposite effect. The owner probably thinks that the club can do well enough with minimal investment following their impressive finish, and that is totally the wrong attitude to have with Rafa Benitez demanding backing. While there is some positivity on the horizon with July fast approaching, the Magpies could well find that many of their priority targets have been snapped up by that point. It is increasingly looking like the club will endure a repeat of last season, with Benitez left to scratch around the loan market in the hours before the transfer deadline.
