Newcastle United have entered the hotly-contested hunt for Porto striker Moussa Marega, according to O Jogo.

The Portuguese newspaper, as translated by Sport Witness, report that the Magpies are now showing interest in the 27-year-old Mali international, along with Wolves.

O Jogo claim that Porto are not looking to sell their star striker, who scored 23 goals last season, and will therefore hold out for his release clause of £35million.

Good move for Newcastle United?

In footballing terms, absolutely.

Marega is a fast and powerful striker with a good eye for goal who has scored at a rate of almost one-in-two throughout his career.

Newcastle need a player who can come in and grab at least 15 goals for them in the Premier League next season, and Marega looks like he has the talent and physicality to potentially do that.

However, a deal with Porto looks to be hard, and there is absolutely no chance that Newcastle should be shelling out £35million for him.

Likely to happen?

More important than the assertion that Newcastle should not be spending that amount of money on Marega is the fact that there is no chance of the club doing so anyway.

Mike Ashley looks to be forcing Rafa Benitez into the bargain market again this summer, and a £35million striker will not be an option at all.
