Much of the transfer focus at Newcastle United this summer will be upon Rafa Benitez’s search for a new striker, but there are other areas of the squad which also need desperately need strengthening.

Right-back is most certainly one of those areas, with DeAndre Yedlin waltzing into the side all season without any real competition for his place.

One player that the Magpies have been linked with in recent weeks is Torino and Italy international right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri, who has now spoken out on the rumours.

Speaking to Goal, he said:  “I had a great season at Torino and I am glad to see that people have noticed. I’m very happy at my club but it’s always a pleasure to know that there could be interest from the Premier League.”

While this is by no means a come-and-get-me plea from the 30-year-old wide man, it is an admission that he would consider a move to England, and Newcastle must pounce upon this opening to firm up their interest.

De Silvestri had a massively impressive season with Torino, scoring seven goals and providing four assists from right-back as the club finished in ninth in Serie A.

This is in comparison to Yedlin, who managed just two assists all season despite playing 34 games for the Magpies in all competitions.

Having that kind of output at right-back would be a massive boost for Newcastle, who are in need of all players increasing their contribution next season.

Another positive sign that De Silvestri would be a hit at St. James’ Park is his size, with the Italian’s 6ft 1in frame [Transfermarkt] putting him in good stead to make an instant impact in the Premier League.

Newcastle desperately need competition at right-back, and with De Silvestri’s admission that he is interested in a move to the Premier League, the club must now step up their interest in him this summer.
