Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost is ready to terminate his contract to secure a summer transfer amid interest from Newcastle United, according to Marca.

The Spanish publication claim the north-east giants are battling Everton and Sevilla to sign the forward and that he is ready to walk out on the Portugese outfit with two years remaining on his contract after he was one of several players recently attacked at Sporting’s training ground by a group of supporters.

Marca report that Newcastle are “very interested” in landing Dost but Sevilla have already sent intermediaries to negotiate a deal for the goal machine.

OPINION

Newcastle fans could be forgiven for raising their eyebrows at the very mention of the possibility of signing Dost. Barely a transfer window goes by without the north-east giants being strongly linked with the giant centre-forward. What is virtually certain is that Dost will quit Sporting this summer after being attacked along with his teammates by ultras at the club’s training headquarters. Some have already terminated their contracts, and the giant forward is seemingly set to follow. Little wonder there is such interest in the services of the 18-times Holland international, even though he recently turned 29. At Sporting, he netted 34 times from 49 matches in the recently completed season and has 70 from 90 games in all competitions for the club. He was also prolific at  former clubs Wolfsburg and Heerenveen. Newcastle face serious competition for Dost’s signature but he could be the solution Rafael Benitez badly needs as he looks high and low for a proven spearhead who can terrorise Premier League defences.
