Newcastle United are now “unlikely” to sign West Brom centre-forward Salomon Rondon this summer in the latest twist in pursuit of him, according to the Shields Gazette.

The Magpies were reportedly in pole position to land him after West Brom’s relegation to the Championship, but the latest report suggests otherwise.

It is understood that Rafael Benitez’s side are monitoring the 28-year-old, who has a £16.5million relegation clause in his deal at the Hawthorns.

The latest report details that the striker’s high wages and agent fees may mean he is too expensive for Newcastle to bring to St James’ Park.

Good move for Newcastle?

Rondon may not be the most eye-catching player due to his physicality and bustling style, but the 6ft 1in (source: Transfermarkt) colossus can be effective int he Premier League.

The Venezuela international scored 10 goals in all competitions for relegated West Brom in the most recent season and deserves to remain in the top flight.

Newcastle are crying out for a new target man that can lead the line and knows where the goal is, which is why Rondon would tick a lot of boxes for them.

Nothing but Newcastle rating: 7/10

Likely to happen?

The latest report suggests that Newcastle have gone from frontrunners to outsiders in the space of five days and Rondon joining the club this summer is growing ever more unlikely.
