Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign Manchester United centre-forward Marcus Rashford on loan, according to the Shields Gazette.

The regional newspaper claim the north-east giants are keeping close tabs on the England international while there is also interest from Everton and Leicester City.

The Shields Gazette report that Rashford, 20, is “open” to a loan move from United next season and will wait to see if he is surplus to Jose Mourinho’s requirements before heading out.

OPINION

With 19 England caps at the age of 20, Rashford is a brilliant young talent who is a matchwinner and a potential international star for the next decade. Blisteringly quick, powerful, two-footed and clinical in front of goal, he has already scored 32 goals from 123 United appearances after making the leap from youth-team to senior football appear a ludicrously easy one. He was a mainstay for Mourinho’s side in 2017-18, scoring 13 goals from 52 matches but was used predominantly on the left flank rather than in his favourite central striker role. With Romelu Lukaku the undisputed first choice spearhead and Alexis Sanchez signed from Arsenal in January, there could be even less appearances for Rashford next season, although much will depend upon whether Anthony Martial remains at the club. United fans will rage if Mourinho allows academy product Rashford to be loaned out. Should Newcastle get him, it would be a blockbuster loan signing.
