Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement and scepticism at the possibility of signing Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost this summer.
The Spanish publication Marca claim the north-east giants are battling Everton and Sevilla to sign the forward and that he is vitually certain to quit the Portugese club in the current window.
It is said that Dost is ready to rip up his contract and forego the two years remaining on it after he was one of several players recently attacked at Sporting’s training ground by a group of supporters.
Marca report that Newcastle are “very interested” in landing Dost, who could now be available on a free transfer.
The Holland international, 29, has an excellent track record at Sporting and previous clubs Wolfsburg and Heerenveen and has been linked to the Premier League club in recent windows.
He scored 34 goals from 49 matches in the recently-completed season and has netted 70 times in 90 games for Sporting in the last two years.
A section of Newcastle fans are excited that their club’s interest is genuine in such a prolific centre-forward, but others are concerned it is just the latest in a long series of rumours about the player.

WAHAAAAY BAS DOST!
Imagine if we have another summer where we keep getting repeated reports about been linked to him. Then he signs for someone else. While we “miss out” on other targets in the process.

Finally put an end to the rumours. I’d happily take him though if the fee is reasonable.
