Newcastle United are reportedly near to signing Swansea City centre-forward Jordan Ayew – and fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mixed verdicts on the pursuit.

Football Ghana claim the north-east giants have made an approach for the striker, 26, and are “closing in” on landing him from the recently relegated Welsh club.

It is said that Newcastle are set to leapfrog newly-promoted Fulham, who have already had an £8million offer rejected for Ayew after falling £5million short of the asking price.

Ayew scored 11 goals from 44 appearances in all competitions, including seven in the Premier League, for Swansea in 2017-18 after joining permanently from Aston Villa in January of last year.

His goal returns at Swansea and Villa are almost identical, with 12 from 58 appearances at the Welsh club and 10 from 58 matches for the Midlands giants.

Newcastle supporters are split between those who think he would be “good business” and would be an upgrade on Dwight Gayle, and those who believe the club must look elsewhere for the proven striker they so badly need this summer.
