Newcastle United are “closing in” on the signing of Swansea City centre-forward Jordan Ayew, according to Football Ghana.

The Ghanian site claim the north-east giants have made an approach for the striker, 26, and have leapfrogged Fulham in the battle to land him this summer.

Football Ghana report that the west Londoners have had an £8million bid for Ayew knocked back and this has opened the door for Newcastle to make a move.

OPINION

Is Ayew the answer to Newcastle’s need for a proven centre-forward who can scare Premier League defences next season? Not really, no. He is a decent striker at that level, but has done little since moving to Aston Villa in the summer of 2015 and then Swansea two years later to suggest he is the A-list performer Rafael Benitez is crying out for. Ayew’s scoring record is okay-ish, but nothing special. At Villa, he netted 10 times in 58 matches and at Swansea, the Ghana international has plundered 12 goals from the same number of games. We’re not talking Harry Kane, here. Far from it. Ayew is a versatile and mobile operator who can play anywhere across the front line, and has the pace to get beyond the backline. But he is not prolific, and that is what Newcastle so badly need. If they’re going to spend big on a centre-forward, it should be on someone who finds the back of the net far more regularly.
