Newcastle United are interested in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to France Football.

The French publication, as translated by Sports Witness, claims that the Magpies are still being mentioned with the 25-year-old despite recently completing the signing of shot-stopper Martin Dubravka.

It is understood that manager Rafael Benitez has held several meetings with the Frenchman, who has been included in his nation’s World Cup 23-man squad.

The report details that Newcastle would be willing to pay between £13.1m-£17.5m to sign the 6ft 4in (source: Transfermarkt) colossus from French champions PSG.

Good move for Newcastle?

Areola is an experienced goalkeeper that has really impressed during his PSG career and would be a brilliant addition to the goalkeeper.

The shot-stopper is confident in possession with both feet and is an imposing figure that can control his penalty area.

He kept an impressive 22 clean sheets in 46 appearances for PSG during the most recent season and he would be a high-profile addition if he made the switch to St James’ Park.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle have been linked with Areola in the past, but it surely seems very unlikely they will bring him in this summer after already landing Dubravka as their number one option for next season.

Benitez will surely want to use the remaining transfer budget on strengthening other areas of the pitch and it would be bizarre to see Areola join too.
