Chancel Mbemba has signed a pre-contract with Porto as he puts the finishing touches to his transfer from Newcastle United, according to A Bola.

The Portugese publication claim the defender, 23, has penned a four-year agreement with the Portugese champions after finalising terms.

A Bola report the two clubs have not yet settled on a fee for Congo international Mbemba but the deal is likely to be done for £7million.

OPINION

There can be little argument that a transfer to the Portugese champions and regular Champions League performers is a good move for Newcastle’s fourth choice centre-back. Mbemba looked the real deal following his transfer from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015 and he was an integral figure in the Toon’s promotion-winning campaign. But the 42-times international slipped down the pecking order following the signing of Florian Lejeune and failed to even make the matchday squad for the second half of last season. Newcastle will not be making a profit on Mbemba – he was said to have cost £8million three years ago – but a fee of £7million for someone not in their first 18 is hardly the worst piece of business ever. With a pre-contract reportedly signed, it will surely now be only a matter of days before Mbemba is unveiled as a new Porto signing.
