Ki Sung-yueng has had a medical with Newcastle United ahead of a proposed move to St James’ Park, according to a reliable journalist.
Chronicle’s chief football writer Lee Ryder has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the 29-year-old has undergone his medical with the Magpies and they are hoping he will become the second signing of the summer.
The pass master has been on international duty at the World Cup this summer and captained his nation South Korea, who managed to beat Germany despite suffering elimination at the group stages.
Ki is available this summer on a free transfer after leaving Swansea City following their relegation from the Premier League and looks primed to link up with Rafael Benitez’s squad.
Ki Sung-yueng, who left Swansea in May, has had a medical at #nufc and if all goes well will be second arrival of the summer on a free transfer. But still no cash bids for anybody else yet. More info to follow as we get it.

OPINION
Newcastle appear to be on the verge of completing a midfield signing and are just waiting on a green light after a medical. Ki could become the latest face to join St James’ Park and on a free transfer it would represent a brilliant bit of business by Benitez. The club’s supporters are obviously wanting their side to splash the cash this summer, but picking up some bargain deals along the way is not to be sniffed at. Ki is a proven central midfielder in the Premier League that has always done an excellent job in the Swansea side and is extremely efficient in possession. He also has great leadership qualities in the way he sets the example and showed those skills with South Korea at the World Cup, who he has 104 international caps for. Newcastle desperately need to try strengthen their squad in most areas this summer and Ki is definitely somebody that can compete alongside Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame for a starting XI position.
