Ian Wright has ripped into Newcastle centre-forward Joselu for a difficult first season at St James’ Park and joked that that he needs to be induced after being so wasteful in front of goal.

The 28-year-old joined the Magpies at the beginning of the campaign and has been considered a flop of the 2017/18 season.

He managed four goals in 32 appearances across all competitions and found himself stuck behind teammate Dwight Gayle in the pecking order for large spells.

Pundit and ex-Arsenal ace Wright delivered his hilarious putdown of the Spanish attacker and feels he was lacked end product when in goalscoring positions.

“Joselu, I felt sorry for him, watching him and I’m thinking at some stage they’re going to have to induce him because you see him get chances and think how did you miss that man,” Wright said, as quoted by the Magpies channel on Youtube.

OPINION

Newcastle only stumped up £5million to sign Joselu last summer and in today’s market they have got their money’s worth. The powerful centre-forward can provide a target man when he spearheads the attack and has shown he links up play well. He has managed to chip in with a few goals, but overall he lacks composure in the penalty box and that has massively let him down this term. Most Newcastle fans would certainly go along with Wright’s assessment of Joselu and he has become a regular figure with the boo-boys. He does offer Rafael Benitez’s side a different option off the bench and can be effective in small patches, but ultimately Newcastle have to go into next season with far better attacking options. The defensive quality helped them remain in the Premier League this year, but supporters are desperate for them to kick on and show some ambition by signing some goalscoring threats this summer.
