Fenerbahce have offered former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel to Newcastle United in an attempt to offload the Slovakian, according to Fotomac

The Turkish outlet report that Fenerbahce are keen to rid themselves of Skrtel’s high wages, with the 33-year-old enforcer earning £3.5million this season.

Fotomac claim that Skrtel was on Newcastle’s radar last summer and he has now been offered up to the Magpies one year later.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Yes and no.

As a defender, Skrtel would be a good addition for Newcastle. The veteran Slovak has vast experience in the Premier League with Liverpool, and knows what it takes to succeed at this level.

However, the 33-year-old is on a wage equivalent to £67,000-a-week at Fenerbahce, and there is no way that a pay packet like that would be worth it for the club.

Skrtel would be a useful addition for a couple of years, but he would need to take a significant pay cut for the deal to be worthwhile for the Magpies.

Likely to happen?

You would think not.

Skrtel’s wages would pose a big problem for Newcastle, who would surely be unwilling to pay him anything close to his current level.

Focus will also surely be on attacking reinforcements and incomings in wide areas, with the Magpies having a settled centre-back partnership already.
