Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is eyeing significant changes to his squad this season and his looks to improve the side’s competitiveness next year, which is likely to lead to plenty of activity across different areas of the field.

While targets have already been identified for the wide areas of attack, a new forward, central midfielders and goalkeepers, it seems that Benitez is also looking to bolster his defence as The Daily Express claims Newcastle are eyeing Ryan Bertrand.

The England international is currently fighting for Southampton’s Premier League status, with the Saints currently occupying the final spot in the relegation zone, and the 28-year-old is likely to be on the move if that objective is not achieved.

Newcastle could then potentially make a move in the market, although they’ll likely face stiff competition from other Premier League teams and it’s not clear whether Bertrand would be targeted as an alternative to Kenedy, or to play behind the Brazil starlet.
