Goalkeeper Matz Sels has agreed to take a big pay cut to seal a transfer from Newcastle United this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper claim the 26-year-old is on the verge of joining Anderlecht permanently after a successful loan spell at the Belgian outfit last season.

The Chronicle report the two clubs are locked in talks over a price but the transfer is certain to be finalised “at some point this summer”.

OPINION

It is telling that Sels is willing to forsake cash in his own bank account to play regular top-level football. Not all players are willing to do the same, with many often preferring to sit on the sidelines and continue to feather their nest. Others will wait until the very last day of the transfer window in order to secure a move in which their mega salary is at least matched, and usually bettered. Sels is entering his peak years and has prioritised job satisfaction and career development. Good on him. He has the makings of a fine goalkeeper, but struggled during his debut campaign at Newcastle after losing his place during the promotion-winning campaign in the Championship. With the club trying to sign Slovakian keeper Martin Dubravka, the writing is on the wall at St James’ Park for Sels. He has an agreement with Anderlecht, where he is popular with fans and will play regularly. This is a good move for him.
