Patrick Roberts would be a brilliant summer signing for Newcastle United.

The Magpies should not only join the race for the brilliant wide forward but go all out to blow the competition out of the water to win his signature.

Roberts said his goodbyes to Celtic supporters on his personal Twitter account on Saturday night after the second of his loan spells at the club came to an end.

The winger is due to return to parent club Manchester City but he faces an uphill battle to force his way into the forefront of Pep Guardiola’s thinking.

Newcastle remain hampered by takeover talks and the uncertainty of manager Rafael Benitez, who has openly admitted his future at the club is in doubt.

But the club can’t afford to sit and twiddle their thumbs, and allow outstanding young talent to seal transfers to Premier League rivals.

Roberts would certainly add a new dimension to a Newcastle attack that was one-paced until Kennedy arrived in the second half of the season to provide some thrust and directness.

Aged 21, he is quick, skilful and capable of creating and scoring goals from his favoured right-flank role, where he cuts in onto his left foot a la Mohamed Salah, Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben.

With 18 goals and 26 assists from 78 appearances at Celtic in the last two-and-a-half years, Roberts has proven he is the real deal with the ability to tear Premier League defences apart.

Newcastle must go all out to sign him. Working under Benitez, he’s good enough to catapult them to seventh in next season’s Premier League.
