Micky Quinn claimed that Newcastle United need to sign a top quality forward this summer and stated that it has to be a player with stature and class.

The retired Magpies favourite declared that while Rafa Benitez won’t have £70million to spend on signing a player who fits the bill, the club must allow the manager to spend his budget where he sees fit.

Quinn name dropped Fernando Torres as his perfect example of the type of forward the Magpies should be looking at recruiting as he is someone who knows where the goal is.

“Newcastle United need that X-Factor up front, this summer has to see a top quality forward come in to grab the goals,” wrote Quinn for the Chronicle.

“I think they’ve got a very good spine of players but they’re just missing that spark up top.

“This summer it is a must. They need someone who has got a bit of class and stature about them. Fernando Torres for example, someone who knows where the goal is.

“It won’t be someone costing £70m – we know that – but what Rafa Benitez must be allowed to do this summer is spend his budget how he sees fit.

“He’s earned the right for that sort of power because of what he has done this season, if he gets a budget of £60m, and decides he wants to spend that on two players, then great, they’re the players he wants and they’re the players he should be able to go out and get.”

OPINION

Quinn is spot on with another one of his Magpies opinions as it’s easy to see that a top quality forward would make an amazing difference at St James Park next season. Benitez’s team are solid at the back and work hard for each other, yet they don’t have the fire power needed to make their efforts count. While Quinn states it needs to be somewhat of stature and class, that might not be necessarily true. There are lots of hidden gems across Europe and beyond in football that could be the hitman Benitez needs at St James Park. While it would be a pretty sight to see Torres in the black and white stripes he wouldn’t be a long-term fix for the side’s problem in front of goal. The 34-year-old may have previously scored 85 goals in 212 Premier League outings but that was when he was younger and had a bit of pace to help him terrify defences. Benitez needs to look for someone proven in England’s top-flight, but maybe a forward about to hit their peak, rather than be past it.
