Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes is the most likely player to join Newcastle United this summer, according to Football Whispers.

The football site claim the Dutch attacker has a strong chance of ending his four-year spell in Russia by heading to St James’ Park.

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 3.9 out of 5 that Promes will join Leeds, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

He is top in the rankings ahead of West Brom striker Salomon Rondon (3.5) and Middlesbrough attacking midfielder Adama Traoré (3.4).

OPINION

Promes has been linked with a move to the Premier League for years, without actually taking the plunge, and has continued to be a big fish in small-ish pond at Spartak. The question is, how good is the Dutchman, and would he be a decent signing for Newcastle? Very good, actually, and absolutely. Capped 26 times by Holland, albeit in a weak era for the Oranje, Promes is a forward who can play anywhere across the front line but operates predominantly on the left flank, cutting in on to his favoured right foot. He has been the top scorer in this season’s Russian Premier League with 15 league goals, and in all competitions has netted 21 times as well as supplied 10 assists. Those are the kind of stats that no Newcastle player can hold a candle to. Promes has also played six times in this season’s Champions League, the kind of top-level experience the Toon are crying out for. There is a sense that the Dutchman could be a huge hit at St James’ Park with his pace, touch and directness. His price tag is undeniably pretty hefty (Football Whispers claim he is valued at £20million), but quality costs money.
