Newcastle trio exit on the cards

Newcastle United could sell Adam Armstrong, Ivan Toney and Jamie Sterry this summer to help raise funds, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper claims that manager Rafael Benitez needs to raise funds to sign a new quality centre-forward in the transfer window and the trio are in danger of exiting St James’ Park.

It is understood that the Magpies will sanction their exits if they receive the right offer, despite the fact that 21-year-old centre-forward Armstrong would love to stay with the club.

Good move for Newcastle?

Armstrong is the most high-profile name of potential departures and it would be a slight surprise to see him leave.

The striker is very much still a star for the future and deserves another loan spell elsewhere to help his development, with the England Under-21 international impressing for Blackburn in the second half of the season by scoring nine goal in 21 appearances.

Toney, 22, is another that impressed out on loan and managed 14 goals across all competitions this season during spells with Wigan and Scunthorpe United.

Sterry, 22, failed to make quite as big an impact with Crewe in League Two, but offloading talented youngsters doesn’t seem the right move for Newcastle.

Likely to happen?

It seems like Benitez’s hand may be forced into selling fringe players this summer, as he needs a recognised goalscorer next season and they certainly don’t come cheap.

Newcastle will be prepared to listen to offers for the young trio and there will surely be some interest shown in them all at some point.
