Newcastle United need to strengthen their squad considerably if they are to establish themselves fully back in the Premier League and they have the perfect manager in place to do so.

Rafael Benitez has kept the Magpies in the top flight at the first attempt and the club now need to show faith in him when the summer transfer window comes around.

There has to be a decent amount of quality arrivals at St James’ Park to ensure they are competitive next season and can kick on up the table.

One man that should crop up on their radar is Everton’s midfield destroyer James McCarthy, who would be a proven performer that would improve the squad.

The Daily Mail reports that Premier League side are currently eyeing the 27-year-old, who looks set to return from a serious injury in pre-season.

It is understood an exit is reportedly on the cards from Goodison Park, as the Merseyside club will listen to offers for the Republic of Ireland international.

McCarthy has been unfortunate with injuries of late and suffered a double leg fracture in January, but with a return on the horizon Newcastle should hijack interest in him.

The Magpies do have some decent options in the shape of Mohamed Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Mikel Merino, but need to reinforce their options.

McCarthy is a combative central midfielder that could break into the Newcastle XI if he recaptured his best form and is a great defensive screen in front of the back four.

The tough tackler is decent in possession and has racked up 222 Premier League appearances in his career, experience that would really prove useful at St James’ Park.
