Newcastle United must pull out all the stops to sign Marouane Fellaini this summer.

The Belgian powerhouse is reportedly looking for a new club after deciding to end his five-year spell at Manchester United.

Marca journalist Diego Martinez claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday that Fellaini will not sign an extension to the contract that expires next month.

This is a golden opportunity for Newcastle to snap up a proven Premier League performer who would add a completely new dimension to their attack.

Fellaini, 30, made his name as a central midfielder who claims his favourite role is screening the defence.

But his greatest impact both at United and former club Everton has come as a battering ram who can be thrown forward when his side are searching for a late goal.

The 80-times international scares the living daylights out of opponents with his aerial prowess and physicality. He is also probably the best in the division at chesting the ball to teammates.

It is a measure of Fellaini’s calibre that Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his admiration, or desire to tie him to a new deal.

Like the Portugese, Rafael Benitez is not afraid of using a plan B or plan C option if plan A has failed.

Fellaini might not be glamorous, or easy on the eye.

But he is mighty effective and capable of winning Newcastle an extra 12 points a season.
