Throughout the January transfer window Newcastle United were linked with several strikers as Rafa Benitez looked to bring in a target man.

While the club ended up with Leicester City striker Islam Slimani on loan, which was a deal that did not work out in the slightest, the name that was most heavily linked with the club was that of Feyenoord star Nicolai Jorgensen.

The 27-year-old Denmark international was the subject of serious interest from the Magpies, with a deal seemingly falling through at the last minute.

The failure of the two clubs to agree a deal obviously hit the 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] giant hard, with his form tailing off massively towards the end of the season, and Jorgensen has now confirmed he would be keen on a move to the Premier League this summer.

Speaking to Danish outlet Bold, as translated by the Chronicle, Jorgensen said: “A lot of things happened. There was something personal and there was a transfer that went into the sink. It caused some annoyances I had not experienced before, and maybe I was not prepared to handle them properly. It took some time to get up again, but I did, and I finished and scored in the cup final, so it was great.

“The Premier League is the biggest challenge for all football players. It is the league where the pace is very high and it could also be fun to try to play there one day. If that happens, I do not know. But it is clear that it could be incredibly cool to try.”

Jorgensen ended the season with 13 goals in all competitions for Feyenoord, with the vast majority of those coming before the interest from Newcastle.

He did end up scoring in the cup final against AZ Alkmaar, with Feyenoord lifting the trophy with a 3-0 win, and now is the perfect time for Newcastle to reignite their hunt.

Jorgensen looks like he could slot in nicely at St. James’ Park, with his height and strength providing a brilliant focal point for the Magpies attack.

His prowess in the air will give other players the chance to get involved in attack, and will provide a stern test for even the best Premier League defences.

Feyenoord were previously unwilling to strike a deal below £20million in the winter, but you would think that a fresh Newcastle bid around £17million would force their hand.

The Magpies must therefore reignite their hunt this summer, with Jorgensen offering an attractive and affordable option up front for them next season.
