Newcastle United clearly need to add some attacking firepower to their squad in the summer window and manager Rafael Benitez has urged the club to break their transfer record.

The Magpies spent £16million to sign Michael Owen in 2005 and the club are yet to surprise that fee since despite the rise in price tags.

Benitez has revealed his side will have to break their transfer record in the summer to bring in a proven goalscorer.

“If you want to bring a striker with a guarantee of more than 10-15 goals per season, you have to pay money for him for sure,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

Newcastle should turn their attention to Atletico Madrid ace Kevin Gameiro after Benitez’s transfer admission and go all out to bring him to St James’ Park.

The 31-year-old centre-forward is currently playing in La Liga with Atletico and could be the answer for the Magpies next season.

He is a France international renowned for his blistering pace and clinical touch in front of goal, scoring 27 goals in 81 appearances for his current side.

Gameiro has an impressive goal record despite not being the first-choice attacker and he has the potential to smash 15-plus goals a season in the Premier League if he leads the line on a regular basis.

He looks well suited to the Premier League with his speed and definitely deserves to be having regular action.

The Sun reported in January that Gameiro was a £25million target for Swansea and Newcastle should test Atleitco’s resolve in the summer with a colossal eight-figure bid that will smash their transfer record.
