Sunderland are reportedly close to appointing St. Mirren manager Jack Ross as their next boss, and Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to hilariously mock the development.

The Black Cats have been without a manager since Chris Coleman was released from his contract in April following their second successive relegation.

Since that time the club have undergone a change of ownership, with American businessman Ellis Short selling up to Stewart Donald and a consortium of investors.

Donald had claimed that a return for former Wales boss Coleman was potentially on the cards, but the club now seem to have plumped with Ross, who has just led St. Mirren back to the Scottish Premiership.

As reported by Sky Sports, the club have agreed terms with the 41-year-old Scot, who was named the PFA Manager of the Year for his title-winning exploits with the Paisley club.

The two sides are said to have agreed a two-year deal with the option of a third, with Sunderland paying £50,000 in compensation to St. Mirren and Ross offered five times what he was earning in Paisley.

Newcastle fans on Twitter have now jumped at the chance to mock their League One neighbours for the impending appointment, with many questioning Ross’ credentials.

Nothing but Newcastle has rounded up some of the best tweets:
