Newcastle United fans on social media were stunned after Belgian opted to name Matz Sels in their 28-man squad for the World Cup.
Belgian revealed their initial squad, via their official Twitter account, ahead of having to name their final squad of 23 players that will be heading to the World Cup in Russia this summer.
While Sels may yet not reach the World Cup with Belgian, as he could be axed by Roberto Martinez on June 4, Magpies were still stunned to see that the goalkeeper had a chance of going.
One fan tweeted questioning the fact that the 26-year-old, who had been so poor for the Magpies in the Championship in their opinion, was seen as the third best goalkeeper in Belgium.
While another supporter took to Twitter to ask if Sels had started playing as an outfield player, with another even revealing that they had forgotten about him.
The shot-stopper didn’t make any appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side in the recently concluded season, and spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan at RSC Anderlect.
While at the Belgian giants, Sels made 37 appearances, conceding 55 goals, while keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

Matz Sels in the Belgian World Cup squad. Can't be the same one that looked a nervous wreck when he was our no.1 keeper last season surely? #NUFC

No Nainggolan, and FOUR keepers. One of whom is Matz Sels! https://t.co/4FMXN3hcbF
