Newcastle United have agreed terms on a new deal with promising midfielder Matty Longstaff, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper report that the Magpies have handed Longstaff a fresh two-year deal, with the 18-year-old expected to make the step up to the Under-23 side next season.

The Chronicle claim that the club were keen to tie the highly-rated ace down to new terms, with Longstaff being eyed up by the England youth set-up.

It is said that defender Lewis Cass has also been handed a new contract, with the enforcer putting pen to paper on a one-year extension.

OPINION

Newcastle have undertaken a massive clear-out of their academy teams this season, with the majority of their youth stars being released from their contracts this summer. The fact that Longstaff and Cass have been kept on show that these are two players the club believe can have futures at the top level, and keeping them on the books is therefore a good move from the club. Longstaff in particular looks to be a real talent, with the 18-year-old now ready to step up and play a starring role for the development side next season. His brother Sean has long been touted as a potential first-team star for the Magpies, and is returning this summer from a successful spell at Blackpool where he netted nine times in 45 appearances. Matty will be looking to emulate that kind of form soon enough, and Newcastle have done well to retain his services. Defender Cass is not as highly-rated but the club obviously see something in him and will be hoping he kicks on in the coming season.
