Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino would be “happy” to return to Spain amid interest from La Liga duo Real Betis and Athletic Bilbao, according to AS.

The Spanish news outlet claims that the 21-year-old is prepared to move back to his homeland to gain more regular first-team football after a mixed first season at St James’ Park.

It is understood that Betis have emerged as potential suitors for the deep-lying playmaker, while Athletic have held a long-term interest in the Magpies ace.

The report details that Rafael Benitez’s side will negotiate with clubs if they make contact for Merino’s signature.

Merino was a firm fan favourite at the beginning of the team as he lit up his side with his exquisite range of passing, but he slipped out of the starting XI in the second half of the season and become more of a fringe player.

Good move for Newcastle?

Merino may have endured a difficult spell in recent months, but selling him now would be a big mistake and his natural ability is clear to see.

The creative midfielder has a huge future under Benitez and there was way too much pressure heaped on the youngster after a promising start at the beginning of the season.

The combination of Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey would have been difficult for anyone to break down in the second half of the season, but Merino should come back next season determined to win his spot back.

Likely to happen?

Merino may reportedly be open to the idea of a return to Spain, but Newcastle fans shouldn’t be too worried and a club would surely have to fork out a huge sum to prize him away from St James’ Park this summer.
