Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba has agreed personal terms with Anderlecht, according to HLN.

The Belgian newspaper claim that the centre-back, 23, settled the terms of a four-year contract with his former club yesterday (Monday).

HLN report that Club Brugge and Standard are keen to hijack Anderlecht’s deal for Mbemba, who has also attracted interest from China and Turkey.

OPINION

Mbemba may have slipped way down the pecking order at Newcastle but he remains a player in demand. Certainly, he is rated in Belgium, where the country’s three biggest clubs are vying for his signature including Champions League regulars and national powerhouses Anderlecht, while interest from China and Turkey is proof of the calibre of a centre-back who has represented Congo on 42 occasions by the relatively tender age of 23. Mbemba has made 59 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015 and is a favourite of supporters, who have always appreciated his effort and willingness to give his best as well as his role in the club’s 2016-17 promotion. With Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark ahead of him in the race for centre-back places, it appears Newcastle are eager to cash in on him and strengthen in other areas of the side. Certainly, quality cover is needed at full-back to provide competition for first-choice pair De Andre Yedlin and Paul Dummett.
