Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has his eye on Sevilla midfielder Alejandro Viedma, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The Spanish football news outlet claim that the 19-year-old midfielder, is entering the final period of his contract with the club, as it’s set to expire at the end of June.

Estadio Deportivo report that Viedma features for Sevilla Atletico in La Liga 2 and that he is a fine midfielder.

Good move for Newcastle?

It seems that Viedma is an exciting prospect, that Benitez no doubt sees potential in, but he doesn’t seem like a signing that would make an instant impact at the club, at least on the first-team.

Viedma has only made four La Liga 2 appearance, while also making 11 appearances in the UEFA Youth League for Sevilla’s youth side this season and is yet to experience senior football.

Estadio Deportivo’s report claims that until recently the doors of the first team have been practically closed to youth at the club, seeing players such as Viedma starved of opportunities when it comes to featuring for Sevilla.

However the midfielder appears to be clearly highly-rated at the club, based on Estadio Deportivo’s report, as it still claims they’re unsure why he left Barcelona’s set-up in 2016 to join the club.

Benitez has an eye for talent and knows the Spanish leagues well, so while there’s relatively little known about the midfielder, given that he will cost nothing once his contract expires in June, the Magpies can’t exactly make a mistake by giving him a go.

Likely to happen?

If the report is to be believed, then the central midfielder could most likely rock up at St James Park in the near future.

The 19-year-old’s contract is due to expire any day now and it’s not hard to assume that if the Magpies have a genuine interest in him, then he’ll leap at the chance to play for a Premier League side.

It’s interesting that the report dictates that it’s still unknown why he left Barcelona’s youth set-up and it suggests that maybe he believes his abilities warrant him a clear route to the first-team than previously had.
