Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Tammy Abraham from Chelsea this summer as he would only be seen as a back-up option at the club, according to a reliable journalist.

Chris Waugh of the Chronicle was asked by a Magpies supporter during a Q&A session about Abraham, who earns £50,000 a week at the Blues according to the Daily Mail, potentially arriving at St James Park this summer.

The respected journalist provided a huge update on the centre-forward, who the Magpies were set to pursue according to TEAMtalk, by breaking down every possible scenario that would stop him arriving.

“Last summer, Benitez was very keen to bring Abraham to Newcastle from Chelsea on loan,” wrote Waugh in his Q&A session for the local newspaper.

“The Spaniard even had the framework of a loan deal agreed but, for a variety of reasons, the striker eventually ended up at the Liberty Stadium instead.

“Abraham did not have a stellar season for Swansea City – he scored just five goals in 31 Premier League appearances – and Chelsea may consider sending him out on loan again in 2018/19.

“Benitez is hoping to recruit a proven top-flight scorer, which Abraham would not be considered, but the 20-year-old could be targeted as a back-up option.

“Given the need for Abraham to play regular first-team football, however, then that will cast doubt on him coming to Newcastle as a second-choice forward. I’d say it’s unlikely, but certainly one United will look at given their positive relationship with Chelsea.”

OPINION

Waugh’s update successfully proves that the link to Abraham is probably just that, a link. The 20-year-old only managed five league goals for the Swans in the recently concluded campaign, despite playing 31 times for them in the Premier League. With Benitez looking for a proven top-flight scorer, the centre-forward certainly doesn’t fit the bill. While the Magpies may look to use their positive relationship with Chelsea, that helped so much with the arrival of Kenedy in January, they probably won’t waste it on Abraham. If there was a way for him to successfully come in as a back-up option a move could materialise, but as Waugh explains the Blues will be looking for a club to provide him regular first-team football. Also the forward himself will no doubt be frustrated at the idea of just moving from one Premier League team’s bench to another. It’s a shame that his goal return wasn’t higher last season as he does on paper tick a lot of the Magpies boxes, but the club know they can’t afford to make pointless signings when it comes to improving their attack.
