It has been a topsy-turvy season for Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino, who quickly became a fan favourite at St. James’ Park before a nosedive in form saw him rot on the sidelines for the final few months of the season.

The 21-year-old Spaniard arrived on an initial loan from Borussia Dortmund before his early season form saw that deal made permanent for £6million in October, and it now looks like he might be on his way out after just a year at the club.

According to Spanish publication AS, La Liga side Real Betis have entered the race for his signature, with Newcastle said to be willing to open talks with interested parties.

AS claim that Merino is looking for more first-team minutes in order to continue his development, and the youngster would also be happy to return to his homeland.

While many Newcastle fans will turn around and say there is no way the club should be considering an exit for Merino, maybe that is in fact the best move for the Magpies.

There are obviously reasons behind Rafa Benitez’s decision to leave Merino out of his side during the second half of the season, and it seems as though the young Spaniard’s heart is maybe not in it on Tyneside.

Speaking to AS at the beginning of April, as quoted by the Chronicle, Merino said: “I am very happy to be in the Premier and the experience in the Bundesliga, but someday I would like to return to the Spanish League. The fact that both Athletic and other teams are playing is a sign that you are doing things right.”

These are not necessarily the words of a man who is determined to make a real impact at St. James’ Park, although Merino has also spoken about his love for the city itself.

Benitez will need every single member of his squad to be raring to go next season, and if Merino will not be totally on board, then maybe an exit is best for all parties.

Newcastle will most certainly make a small profit on the 6ft 1in ace [Transfermarkt], with the £6million they paid Dortmund looking like a snip, and that adds to the argument that letting him leave may be the sensible option.

While it may not be a popular choice, the Magpies need everyone pulling towards the same goal if they want to achieve a European place, and that is the absolute priority here.
