Rafa Benitez is set for showdown talks with Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley on Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that the Spanish manager, who has a £6million exit clause in his current deal, is hoping to find out the club’s transfer budget for next season as he is still none the wiser.

The Daily Mail report that the talks will determine Benitez’s future at the club as he’s extremely reluctant to repeat the results of last summer’s transfer window, where he missed out on all his priority targets.

It is believed that the manager’s future at St James’ Park remains as unclear as ever, with no change of ownership likely to happen in the near future.

OPINION

Another day, another Benitez story that makes his future look in doubt. Hopefully these reports will look foolish in a few weeks time when the Magpies confirm that their genius manager is staying put. However each report raises a new realistic issue as to why Benitez wouldn’t want to face another difficult campaign with a club that keeps dragging its feet in the transfer market. The Daily Mail’s report on this occasion suggests that even though the manager still has a year left on his current deal, a lot rests on how his talks with Charnley go. It’s hard to predict the transfer budget Benitez will be handed or how much would be enough to keep him at the club, but only time will tell on that account. The Magpies are set to take on Chelsea in their last game of the season and if it is the last time Benitez is seen in the home dugout at St James’ Park, supporters will no doubt give him the positive reception he deserves.
