Newcastle United speed demon Rolando Aaron was meant to make a brilliant comeback in the 2017-18 season after missing the majority of the previous year through injury, but things have gone from bad to worse for him.

The 22-year-old is a left-winger that has come through the Magpies academy and has been tipped to become a full pledged first teamer for several years.

He managed just five first-team appearances for Rafael Benitez’s side in the first half of the season and was unable to really force himself into contention.

The Englishman did show promise with a goal and an assist against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup, but against better opposition he looks lost at time.

Aarons linked up with Italian club Hellas Verona for a short-term loan in January and he has been unable to make a serious impression.

He has failed to contribute directly to a goal during 11 appearances, as his loan team have suffered relegation from Serie A and he failed to show his qualities.

Aarons is definitely a young player that still has huge potential, but needs to improve his decision making and perhaps needs a slice of luck to make a senior impression.

Benitez should seriously plot to offload him on loan for the next season and sending him to the Championship were he can ply his trade seems like the smartest move.

He has blistering pace and the ability to take on defenders, but for now seems unlikely to make an impact in the first team at St James’ Park next year.

Aarons has definitely gone backwards from the time he first burst onto the scene as a raw attacker and is getting to the age where he needs to harness his skills.
