If only the Premier League season began on January 1st. If it did, Newcastle would be sitting comfortably in seventh on 16 points from a possible 30 with a positive goal difference and nine points above the relegation zone.
Only Tottenham (1st), Manchester City (2nd), Liverpool (3rd), Manchester United (4th), Bournemouth (5th) and Leicester (6th) have bettered Benitez’s side over the last 10 matches – with United still having a game in hand over three of those teams, although that is against Spurs.
With seven matches left to play this season and just two wins required to assure their Premier League status, Benitez has timed his side’s resurgence to absolute perfection.
