Newcastle United have turned a significant corner recently, with a three-match winning streak helping the Magpies push ten points clear of the relegation zone.

Rafael Benitez’s side have excelled in that run of matches, whilst the performances of Jonjo Shelvey have once again caught the eye.

The former Liverpool man had to fight his way back into the side following the capture of Mikel Merino last summer but the England international has now turned the tables, with the Spain U21 international now enduring a stint on the sidelines.

With Shelvey’s upturn in form, former West Ham man Tony Cottee has called for England boss Gareth Southgate to recall Shelvey to the Three Lions set-up for the World Cup ahead of Arsenal ace Jack Wilshere.

Speaking to Sky Sportshe said:

“Whoever you name that’s been in that England squad, there isn’t anyone who can pass the ball better than Shelvey. You need a Wilshere in the team, or a Shelvey, who can open up defences. You don’t want loads of workmanlike midfielders who don’t create and pass the ball.”

“Jonjo brings something different to the table. I wouldn’t definitely have him in the squad, but if I was Gareth Southgate I’d be looking at him and thinking very carefully.”

The 26-year-old last appeared for England in 2015 and has failed to earn an opportunity to add to his six caps.
