Newcastle United have pushed themselves away from the relegation zone in recent weeks and, whilst safety is not yet mathematically secure, the Magpies look destined to retain their top-flight status for another year.

That has allowed Rafael Benitez to begin to focus on his side’s summer transfer activity, where there’s set to be plenty of business coming both in and out of St. James’ Park.

The Northern Echo report a significant decision has been made on the futures of defensive pairing Jesus Gamez and Massaido Haidara, as the Magpies have not opened discussions regarding new deals for the out of favour full-backs.

As such, Gamez and Haidara are both poised to leave on a free transfer when their contracts expire in June and Benitez has deemed the pair surplus to requirements.

Gamez, signed from Atletico Madrid in 2016, last appeared for Newcastle in September and has only started three league games for the Magpies since arriving at the club, earning a further four opportunities off the bench.

Meanwhile, Haidara has struggled for injury set backs in his five years at Newcastle and has only one league appearance in the past two years, coming on the final day of last season against Barnsley.
