Newcastle United have recalled young midfielder Dan Barlaser from his loan stint with League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra after his spell at the fourth-tier side turned sour, The Chronicle states.

Barlaser moved to the club on-loan to earn more regular first-team opportunities but failed to start a single league game for Crewe and saw his opportunities limited to just 58 minutes off the bench, although the boss of the League Two side insists it’s purely down to the form of those ahead of them.

Crewe boss David Artell spoke of Barlaser’s recall by stating:

“I spoke to Dan and to Newcastle and explained that those ahead of him in the team didn’t deserve to not be playing. Dan said he wasn’t playing enough and I had to agree with him.”

“It was just a question of those lads ahead of him doing well. Dan had done well but not well enough to get past Callum Ainley and Charlie Kirk. He played some Under-23 games for us and when I spoke to Newcastle about the situation, they thought it was better for him to return there and play Under-23 football for them.”

“That was fine and it was all amicable. We all wish him well.”

The 21-year-old is yet to earn a senior appearance for Newcastle and has spent 12 years on Tyneside.
