Few players in the history of the club have managed to divide the opinion of supporters so vociferously as Mitrovic. The Serbia international is an immensely popular cult figure on Tyneside but has failed to convince Benitez he can lead the line at Newcastle despite many opportunities to prove otherwise.
Nine goals in 13 matches for Championship promotion chasers Fulham following a January loan move is an illustration of Mitrovic’s natural goalscoring pedigree, but Benitez still harbours concerns about his temperament.
The 23-year-old has already expressed a desire to remain at Craven Cottage beyond this season having flourished under the management of fellow Serb Slavisa Jokanovic. And should the west London club achieve promotion and submit an offer close to United’s asking price then Mitrovic could conceivably begin next season as a permanent Fulham player.
