Newcastle United have excelled in the Premier League this season, fighting for a spot within the top-half of the table, but fans will be forgiven for wondering what might have been if a major deal went ahead many years ago.

According to reports cited by The Chronicle, Newcastle came close to securing the services of Mohamed Salah back in 2011 when the Egypt ace was just a bright-eyed youngster at El Mokawloon in his homeland.

In quotes from Salah seven years ago, he said:

“Newcastle will soon make an official offer to sign me for one season. I don’t think Contractors will refuse to let me play in the English Premier League. It’s a dream for any player to play in one of the strongest league competitions in the world.”

However, it’s not entirely clear why a deal for the current Premier League top-scorer went ahead and it may have been because Newcastle, managed by Alan Pardew at the time, would not pay £500k for a loan deal to go ahead.
