Whilst Newcastle United are not mathematically secure from Premier League relegation, a vital 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town has extended the Magpies’ advantage over the drop zone to a solid seven points.

There’s still work to do in the final seven matches of the season, where Newcastle face tough tests against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, but Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has stated his belief that the Magpies are nearly safe.

A fantastic run of just one defeat in the last seven matches has bolstered the position of Rafael Benitez’s side and former Arsenal defender Merson, who covered the game against Huddersfield at the weekend, believes Newcastle’s top-flight status is almost secure.

“Newcastle are one win away from safety. They were brilliant in the first half; in the first 30 minutes they had 10 shots on goal.”

“They kept on going in the first half but in the second half they never got themselves going and Huddersfield came back into the game. But the goal was superb and they definitely deserved to win the game.”

Newcastle tackle Leicester City this weekend, before welcoming Champions League hopefuls Arsenal to St. James’ Park the following week.
