Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is gearing up for a crucial transfer period and he’s still keen on landing a midfielder that the Magpies first eyed last summer.

Fulham skipper Tom Cairney has continued to adorn the back pages of the press and remains linked with a move to Newcastle this summer, with the chances of a transfer for the Scottish international raising significantly if the Cottagers fail in their bid to return to the Premier League.

However, Newcastle can expect a fierce battle to land the 27-year-old as The Sun states Leicester City are also keen on the midfielder, sparking a £20m transfer tussle in the market.

Newcastle saw a bid in that region rejected last summer but are ready to move again after Cairney’s superb season with the west London side, who is on the shortlist to win the award for the Championship’s player of the season.

Given Leicester’s interest, and Fulham’s desire to keep their skipper, Newcastle will surely have to raise their bid if they’re to get their man.
