Newcastle United have excelled in their return to the Premier League this season, fighting for a spot in the top-half of the standings as they prepare for the final five games of their campaign.

Rafael Benitez faces some big decisions this summer though, as he seeks a restructure to improve the competitiveness of his side in the top-flight next season, and it could lead to exits for some fringe players at St. James’ Park.

Amongst those linked with an exit is DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba, who has made just seven Premier League starts this season, and fellow outcast Matz Sels has leaped to the defence of the 23-year-old.

Currently on-loan with Anderlecht Sels, who’s own future is cast in doubt, said Mbemba is one of Newcastle’s best. Speaking to SportFoot, he said:

“For me, he’s one of the best defenders at Newcastle United. Why does he play so little? I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.”

Mbemba has struggled for opportunities this season due to competition with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejuene, established as first-choice, whilst Ciaran Clark is also ahead of him in the pecking order.
